| Apple Ring Cup Published On 01-30-2008 , 10:53 AM I had such fun making the Rhododendron Ring Cup that I thought I'd make another. This one is made from Apple, hence the name!![]() This actually fills a "suggestion" that I received for a ring cup of Apple and Pink Ivory. Quite a nice combo! The Apple has a slightly pinkish tone that really complements the Pink Ivory. I won't accept "custom" orders as every piece of wood is unique and I can not guarantee that a customer will be happy with the piece before I make it. So, if you see something you like but want it in a different wood, you can submit a suggestion for it via my contact form. Please subscribe to either my RSS or Email list to be automatically notified when I add something new to the Gallery. I make ring cups with a thicker bottom to keep them upright. If they were any less substantial they'd be tippy and could easily "weeble". And that would not make for a very good ring cup! This one has a bit of glamor; The Pink Ivory is actually a ring around the bottom and in the center of the bottom I've set a tiny white rhinestone. The bottom is slightly concave so the stone does not contact the surface or cause the cup to wobble.I have gotten many positive comments on the first ring cup, so look for more in the Gallery. | Assorted funny images Published On 01-28-2008 , 2:33 PM ![]() This has got to be the prettiest wood pile I've ever seen!
Still, it's a shame to burn all that wood ![]() ![]() From Cracked.com, a great site when you have time to kill. Only a woodworker would notice that the chairs had stain and the table didn't! ![]() Interesting sketch from xkcd.com, an online comic. Comments (1) | ||
| Rhododendron Trufful™ Published On 01-28-2008 , 12:44 PM So, its been several days since I posted something new in the gallery. Unfortunately the workshop is not insulated so when the temperature drops to the low 40°s in the shop it is just too cold to be handling sharp tools and playing with rapidly whirling wood chunks! This piece came from the same branch of Rhododendron that the Ring Cup came from. This was a "Y" junction so there are three "bulls eyes". The center (pith) of the entire branch had turned to dust so I dug it out and filled it with gold Mica powder. The finish on this and the Ring Cup is amazing. The chatoyance is so deep it is almost holographic. This wood is extremely hard, and as you can see, it takes such an extreme polish it almost looks like glass. I only wish I had a source for more of it. A fellow turner gave it to me; said he had it laying around for many years. It was from an enormous shrub he removed a long time ago. The Curly Maple enhances the Rhododendron nicely with its yellow/green flames and the shimmer from the curly grain. I hope you enjoy this piece. The shop was 51° this morning so I should be able to work in there for a bit tonight. Perhaps another piece of apple will get put on the lathe... I'm thinking about another small natural edge ring cup. Comments | ||
| Hot Off The Lathe :: Welcome Published On 01-17-2008 , 6:32 PM If you'd like to keep up to date on new items added to the Truffuls™ site you have two options. 1. Subscribe to my RSS feed. What is an RSS feed??? "Really Simple Syndication" is a Web feed that can notify you when a new entry is posted to a site or blog. I have all my RSS feeds on my iGoogle page. It's free, fast and easy to set up. There are also many RSS readers (Aggregators) available to use with your browser, email client or IM application. I will post a new entry on this blog every time I add a new item to my gallery. Entries may contain more images and/or details on the process of creating the piece. I'll also add fun entries on projects that didn't see the light of day or curious tidbits on the life of a woodturner. 2. Join my email list. Click on "Join Email List" on the blog page and you will receive an email when I update the site. This will be low-volume; not more than one email a day, more likely; four or five a week. I appreciate your continued interest in my art. Enjoy! Comments | ||
